What is fleece rot?

Fleece rot is a dermatitis caused by moisture and bacterial growth on the sheep’s skin that produces an exudate that becomes crusty. The crusty exudate results in a matted band of wool fibres separated from the skin that reduces fleece value.  Fleece rot is also the main predisposing factor in fly strike to the body.
