Teeth issues in Cats

How to fix your cats teeth problems?

No matter what kind of pet you have, if there are teeth present, you can bet they require some care. How do you know if your pet has a problem with his/her teeth?

What you might see:

  • Bad breath
  • Pawing at the side of the face
  • Tilting head when eating
  • Refusing to eat, yet appearing hungry
  • Loose teeth

What you can do

The best way to prevent tooth problems is to give the pet regular check-ups, say every 6 months. Correct feeding will also prevent most problems. Your vet will be happy to advise you on the correct diet for your cat.

What vets can do

If there is extensive tooth damage, dental surgery is the next stop. It is performed under a general anaesthetic and involves scraping each individual tooth to remove plaque, including underneath the gums. Damaged or rotten teeth are removed and all teeth are then polished.

Antibiotics may be prescribed if there is infection.
